Eastern Cape | SAPS NEWS: One of Port Elizabeth's Most Wanted Criminals Shot and Killed by Police

As part of crime stabilization and combatting of gang related murders, National Intervention Unit deployed in the Northern Areas launched a manhunt searching for one of the Port Elizabeth’s most wanted suspect this morning, 26 March 2019, in Blesbok Street in Gelvandale, which resulted in the suspect


gunned down.


It is alleged that Shakoer Mohammed, also known as Jiggley (26) affiliated to the Spotbouer gang was fatally wounded as he was running away to evade arrest. At about 09:30, members followed up on information and spotted the suspect in Blesbok Street. He started running with police on his heels. In Hartebees Street he pointed a firearm at the police who fired a shot fatally injuring him. A revolver has been found lying next to him.


Shakur was wanted by police for a murder which took place on 27 February 2019 in Dinsmore Street in Shauderville. It is alleged that at about 11:55 on the day, Remo Januarie, aged 40, was shot in the chest while walking in the street. Further investigations revealed that Jiggley was involved and a warrant for his arrest was issued. A case of murder has been opened and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been informed.


Acting Provincial Commissioner, Maj Gen Thembeka Dyantyi has re-iterated that, “The South African Police Service will be doing everything in our power to ensure that the ongoing gang violence in these areas is stabilized and suspects arrested. Since December 2018 the National Intervention Unit (NIU) and Provincial Tactical Response Team (TRT) have been assigned to the hotspot areas of Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp. An additional deployment of NIU and Special Task Force joined their counterparts in February 2019. These teams are concentrating on stabilization of gangsterism, illegal firearms and trio crimes which remain a priority in the Province,” she said.
