Gauteng | Police recovers jewellery worth thousands of rand in Hillbrow

Police have launched a manhunt for a group of suspects following the arrest of three of their accomplices (aged 31, 33) and the recovery of jewellery worth more than R40 000 at the Diamond Exchange shop in Hillbrow on Friday. The jewellery was stolen during an armed robbery of

a jewellery store at The Glen shopping mall on Thursday (24January 2019) last week. The suspects are due to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate Court on Monday.

Through crime intelligence and information from the members of the community, police tracked down the suspects at Berea and recovered the jewellery. he jewellery was stolen when a group of four suspects entered the store at the mall and pointed the staff with firearms. They loaded jewellery worth more than R300 000 in their bags and fled from the scene without firing any shots. No one was hurt during the robbery. Police are still questioning the suspects to establish the whereabouts and identity of their gang-members who are still at large.

In an unrelated incident, a man who faked a hijacking is due to appear at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on charges of perjury. He reported a hijacking by three men whom he had an appointment with to sell his vehicle at the local shopping mall. On further investigation police tracked down the vehicle at a dealership in Rustenburg where he had sold it.
