KWAZAKELE: Swift action by the Motherwell Tactical Response Team (TRT) ensured the recovery of a hijacked vehicle and arrests of two suspects.
This follows after a white Toyota Hilux bakkie was hijacked behind Shoprite in Daku Road, Kwazakele at 09:30. The owner was about to do a pickup of stock at the loading area when he was approached by 2 suspects armed with a fire arm. They demanded his vehicle keys and drove off with it.
About 30 minutes later Motherwell TRT members spotted the vehicle in Mbilana Street, Kwazakele. On approaching the vehicle, three suspects that were at the vehicle started to run away. The TRT members arrested one of them, a 29-year-old male, but the other 2 suspects managed to evade arrest.
On further investigation the canopy of the vehicle was found in the yard of the house where the bakkie was parked in front of.
The 50-year-old home owner was also arrested on a charge of possession of stolen goods.
Both suspects will appear before the New Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 3 December 2018 on their respective charges for vehicle hijacking and possession of stolen property.
The swift actions of SAPS was applauded by the Motherwell Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie and added that "we (SAPS) have deployed extra police members in our cluster area and will continue to focus on high crime areas for the remainder of the festive season and during SafetyFriday periods."
