POPS and other Law Enforcement agencies are monitoring the situation in Saldanha area following an illegal march, burning of tyres, throwing of stones in the roads and at police by a group of about 5000 people (of Irak and Middelpos informal settlements and it spread to Diazville) this morning about 03:00. Action was taken to disperse the crowd.
According to reports the Diazville Civic and some of the buildings at the Tabakbaai Holiday resort was set alight. No injuries were reported.
Case of Public violence was opened for investigation.
SAPS recognises the right of the people to protest as provided in the constitution. However, they are expected to do so within the confines of the law. We urging protesters to carry themselves in an orderly manner that does not infringe on the rights of others.
Police and other Law Enforcement Agencies continue to monitor the situation.
