Yesterday afternoon, police officers from the Pietermaritzburg Flying Squad and K9 Unit made a breakthrough when they arrested four suspects who were allegedly involved in an armed robbery at Bergville. The police officers were following up information with regards to the suspects who allegedly robbed a business owner at Bergville earlier on the day.
A description of the two vehicles used by the suspects were circulated to all police vehicles in the vicinity and on the escape routes from the crime scene. While the police officers were patrolling along N3 freeway outside Pietermaritzburg, they spotted the two vehicles. A vehicle chase ensued and one vehicle with three occupants was stopped along N3 freeway. It was searched and a large amount of cash, blue lights, bullet proof vests, police uniform, an unlicensed 9mm pistol and other exhibits were seized. The three suspects were immediately arrested.
The second vehicle was stopped along the Camperdown turn-off and one suspect was arrested. All four arrested men who are aged between 28 and 36, were charged with armed robbery, possession of property suspected to be stolen and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They will appear in the Bergville Magistrates Court soon.
On 9 October 2018 at 11.45, the victim (72) and three relatives were at their home when they were accosted by a group of men who posed as police and SARS officials. They were tied up while the suspects stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the safe as well as two hand guns. Investigations are ongoing and more arrests are imminent.
