The popular annual festive lights switch-on event in the City of Cape Town will not take place this year due to COVID-19 restrictions on the number of people allowed to gather in public spaces.
The event's open air concert attracts hundreds of thousands of people in the Cape Town CBD and
marks the start of the festive season.
In a statement, the City of Cape Town says it has taken the decision to cancel it this year in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the extension of the National Disaster Management Act restrictions.
It says the safety of residents is a priority.
Several smaller events are being considered as part of the revitalisation programme for the Cape Town CBD."https://scontent-jnb1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-0/p280x280/122047823_3641055705946787_3066204711726547435_o.jpg?_nc_cat=109&_nc_sid=110474&_nc_ohc=pw1It7xFOWsAX-T_xmQ&_nc_ht=scontent-jnb1-1.xx&tp=6&oh=d0df9d2a8568c72786da1c8c9b65772d&oe=5FB2A8CA"
