Police Minister, Bheki Cele, has expressed concern over what he calls, the growing extortion of legitimate businesses by organised criminals, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He met with Western Cape Minister for Community Safety, Albert Fritz, senior police generals and the Mayco Member for Safety, JP Smith to find
solutions to the allegations of extortion of businesses in Cape Town.
Cele says paying a "protection fee" amounts to theft: "The business particularly restaurants and coffee shops in Cape Town predominantly in the city are being bullied into paying that is called protection fees.
Let me say that we view the situation very seriously as this does only constitute a crime but it also impacts on the grand economic strategy of this country when the nation is working hard to revitalise the economy.""https://scontent-jnb1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-0/s526x296/119672774_3541907629194929_6511034665419407513_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&_nc_sid=110474&_nc_ohc=oH1cgr1vpzwAX-t8igj&_nc_ht=scontent-jnb1-1.xx&tp=7&oh=5af8d832af4691a723b7ef661986877f&oe=5F8867C1"
