A Western Cape provincial traffic officer who was shot and injured at George yesterday, is in a stable condition and recovering in hospital.
The 29-year-old female officer was shot in the neck after stopping a car that was being driven recklessly.
The driver shot at her and fled the scene.
He was later
shot and wounded by police and is in custody.
He will appear in court next week.
Police also say the suspect was alone in the vehicle, contrary to previous reports about two oth er accomplices.
Provincial traffic spokesperson, Jandre Bekker: "The female traffic officer who was shot yesterday is recovering after surgery and her condition is stable.
She was shot after the, suspect tried to steal her firearm during a routine stop on the Pacaltsdorp Bridge in George.
Two bullets hit the officer.
The firearm was retrieved and the suspect was apprehended.
The Department of Transport and Public Works strongly condemns any attack on its law enforcement officials, even more so when it is female officer and that during Women's Month above that."
