A taxi driver has been arrested for the murder of a Cape Town traffic officer.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says 46-year-old Deon Sampson was checking the license disc on a taxi waiting in the queue at a Khayelitsha roadblock last night, when the driver accelerated, ran
him over and dragged him along the road for nearly 200 metres before the body dislodged.
Smith says the rest of the officers chased after the vehicle, but the driver refused to s top.
They had to discharge several rounds at the vehicle, before the driver was eventually apprehended off Oscar Mpetha Drive: .
"What happened to officer Sampson is horrific and I call on the South African Police to expedite this investigation so that justice can be served.
The city extends its condolences to officer Sampson's spouse and his three children and his extended family.
As well as the colleagues in the traffic department.
It cuts deep when we lose one of our own but even more so when the circumstances are as incomprehensible
as what transpired last night." The suspect is expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court on Tuesday "https://scontent-jnb1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-0/p526x296/117296098_3422008007851559_7789190764806460548_o.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_sid=110474&_nc_ohc=YxC78gsiVH4AX9PWvzW&_nc_ht=scontent-jnb1-1.xx&_nc_tp=6&oh=7bda93890e1aaefa563e6f6dfcb571ab&oe=5F539E2A"
