The new firearm amnesty period for illegal and unwanted weapons starts today and will last until the end of January.
The period has been extended because of disruptions caused by COVID-19.
The earlier amnesty period expired in May.
Police spokesperson Brenda Muridili says despite the lockdown, nearly 47-thousand Firearms were handed
" We are appealing to people to surrender their illegal and unwanted Firearms without fear of prosecution.
Those with expired firearm comp etencies and licenses may surrender their Firearms while applying for the new licenses.
It must be noted that no indemnity would be granted for Firearms previously used to commit crime.
All Firearms that have been handed in will undergo ballistic testing to ensure that they have not been used in the commission of a crime before they can be considered for destruction.
