Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato has welcomed swift suspension of four Law Enforcement Officers, saying such behaviour will not be tolerated in the City.
This comes after the officers taking part in an illegal land invasion operation yesterday were caught on camera manhandling a naked man in Khayelitsha.
Plato says while evictions
are not permitted under the lockdown, the courts, as well as the National Minister of Human Settlements, Lindiwe Sisulu have made it clear that municipal ities across South Africa have a duty to prevent illegal land invasions .
"That is not how the officers should have acted.
On behalf of the city of cape town and my office I want to deeply apologise for what happened to that person.
It was indeed inhuman.
We have suspended 4 officers.
A full investigation is already underway by the city of cape town senior officials to investigate everything happened yesterday so that we can get to the bottom of the situation.
It is fact that land is earmarked for municipal services.
For bulk infrastructure."
