Taxi organisation SANTACO has warned law enforcement agencies that members will bring the country to a standstill if one of their vehicles is impounded for loading at 100 per cent capacity and travelling to other provinces.
SANTACO President Phillip Taaibosch has also demanded that all taxis that were impounded at the
start of the lockdown be released.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says it is unfortunate and regrettable that the taxi industry has elected to violate the lo ckdown regulations.
He was reacting to yesterday's announcement by SANTACO and the National Taxi Alliance that they will be loading taxis at full capacity from this morning and resume inter-provincial operations.
He says government has a responsibility to ensure that all measures are in place to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
Mbalula has appealed to the industry's leadership to reconsider their decision.
The minister's spokesperson Ayanda Allie Paine says the minister is awaiting a decision from the National Coronavirus Command Council on the taxi industry.
