One of only two theatres in Cape Town's southern peninsula, and situated in a historic church building overlooking False Bay, has announced its closure, mainly as a result of the lockdown regulations that prohibit live performances to seated audiences in the same venue.
Followspot Productions says it has terminated its lease
to run the iconic Kalkbay Theatre and Restaurant after many years because of no income since the government's introduction of restrictions at the end of March to curb the spread of Covid-19.
The theatre group says they could not keep it afloat anymore due to ongoing building and staff costs without ticket sales.
The troupe, who is a regular feature and winner at the annual Art Festival at Makhanda (Graham'stown), says they are considering other options for the theatre group to keep on performing in another venue once the shutdown regulations have been lifted.
