A call has been made by different faith leaders for them to be declared an essential service during the lockdown.
This emerged at a virtual meeting held between President Cyril Ramaphosa and religious organisations.
It forms part of a broader consultation process as the country prepares for level 3.
President of the South
African Hindu Maha Sabha Ashwin Trikamjee says religious bodies have an important role to play in assisting government.
He says, "The faith leaders can play a very important role in assisting the government in managing the entire challenge that COVID-19 presents.
The churches the mosques, the temples, the temple halls for instance, and the various community halls could be easily made available for the government to utilise to house COVID-19 patients."
