In a unique case of restitution, Stellenbosch University is today handing back original furniture seized from a local school by the then apartheid government in the late sixties.
Learners from Luckhoff School were forcibly removed from the school using the Group
Areas Act of 1950.
In a symbolic procession, a small group of learners from the Class of 1969 at Luckhoff School carried the original desks that were removed from the school through the streets of Stellenbosch.
The de...sks will be incorporated into a newly created Luckhoff Living Museum.
The university says the project is part of promoting healing in the community and reflecting on the country's painful past.
It says it recognizes its connection to past injustices.
Recently, the University of Cape Town announced
the return of the skeletons of 11 people to Sutherland that were obtained unethically by the institution in the apartheid era.
