It is reported that a missing person file
was opened on 13 July 2016 when the parents of Gershwin reported him missing to the SAPS.
Shaun Karelse was arrested on 15 July 2016 for possession of property of the deceased and also on suspicion of hiding the deceased's vehicle.
The body of Gershwin was found in an open veld at the dumping site on the R31 near the shooting range.
The SAPS was accompanied by the suspect Shaun Karelse.

The investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Desmond Markgraaff of the Kimberley Detective Branch worked diligently to trace the murderers.
Kamogelo Mochumi and Boitumelo Matlhola were arrested after their names were mentioned during the interrogation.
D/W/O Markgraaff worked tirelessly to ensure that these criminals were found guilty.
On 04 November 2019, 27-year-old Shaun Karelse was sentenced to 12 years for robbery and 8 years for Kidnapping and life imprisonment for murder.
Kamogelo Mochumi (33) was sentenced to 7 years for Robbery and 8 years for Kidnapping and life imprisonment for Murder.
Boitumelo Matlhola (22) was sentenced to 12 years for Robbery and 8 years for Kidnapping and 23 years for Murder.
The Acting Station Commander of Kimberley, Colonel Sam Nkosi and the Detective Branch Commander, Colonel Rassie Victor applauded D/W/O Markgraaf for his professional and outstanding investigation and for ensuring that our community feels safe by removing these murderers from society.
This achievement are through mutual understanding and cooperation between the SAPS, NPA and the Department of Justice, said Colonel Victor.
