A "roosterkoek star" from Laingsburg in the Western Cape could soon be on her way to Italy as a special guest at a 3-day cycling event.
63-year-old Rosaline "Poppie" van As runs a small roadside 'roosterbrood' stand on the N1 in the area.
Her dream of flying could soon be realised after
a chance meeting with 43-year-old Cape Town cyclist, Stan Engelbrecht.
"I happened to be cycling in Laingsburg around New Year's about 6 years ago, and to be honest, the first thing that drew me to Poppie's roadside stand was the wonderful aroma of her ‘roosterbrood'.
I bought one, with jam and cheese if I remember correctly, and we had a chat.
If you've ever met Poppie, you'll know that she is instantly likeable.
Just full of great energy.
Before I left town, I returned to her stand and bought a few more plain ‘roosterbrood', simply because they're that delicious." A few months later, Engelbrecht asked Poppie to prepare some ‘roosterbrood' for a bicycle race he was organising in the town.
"She was a huge hit,
preparing her ‘roosterbrood' on a hill just outside of town near the end of that day's racing stage.
Everyone loved it, and so she was asked to return every year," says Engelbrecht.
Now, he's invited her to Italy to share stories about her life and her food.
Engelbrecht plans to raise R100 000 for the trip to cover Van As' visa, plane ticket, clothes and spending money and costs to film a documentary about her.
The Eroica Cycling Event takes place in Gaiole, Italy in September.
Donations can be made through the crowdfunding platform BackaBuddy.
