Gang-related violence is burdening the Western Cape's health budget and resources.

Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo has revealed that the treating of a gunshot wound could cost up to R25 000 per patient.

This figure excludes the length of stay in hospital and

the related medical intervention costs.

Mbombo was speaking at the signing of the Presidential Health Compact which seeks to improve the health system.

Over the past weekend nearly fifty people were killed in the Western Cape.

At least 21 of those murders were as a result of a shooting.
