Happy 101st Birthday Tata Madiba Today on July 18, Alpha Alarms joins South Africans and the rest of the World, in commemorating the 101st birthday of Nelson Mandela.
On this day in 1918, Rolihlahla Nelson Dalibhunga Mandela was born into the Madiba clan.
A trailblazer as a youth,
his journey took him to various paths from student to protestor then lawyer, a prisoner, and finally president and leader.
Today on Mandela Day, we celebrate Madiba's legacy of freedom and resistance against oppression.
We remember his life imprisonment sentence with seven others on June 11, 1964, and his incarceration on Robben Island.
Mandela spent 18 years in a 7 foot-squared cell often thrown into solitary confinement.
It was there that he was known as Prisoner 46664.
In 1982, Madiba was transferred to Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town and there began the stirrings of the dismantling of the apartheid government.
On 10 May 1994, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was inaugurated as President of South in the country's first-ever democratic elections.
He set in motion a
legacy that will live on forever and on December 5, 2013, the great South African icon passed away in his Houghton Estate home at the age of 95.
We Salute You Tata Madiba!
