The trial of two men accused of torturing a seal pup is expected to start today in the Laaiplek Magistrate's Court in the Western Cape.

Marius Tredoux and Rynard van den Heever are facing a number of charges under the Biodiversity


Act‚ Marine Living Resources' Act and the Animal Protection Act which protect threatened marine species.

In a cellphone video that went viral on social media, one of them can be seen stabbing the young seal, while the other is filming the incident that took place in December 2017.

A case was opened in June 2018 and they have appeared in court eight times.

Reasons for the various postponements include that the defense needed more time to consult with his clients, the defense


lawyer was ill and that not all witnesses were present.
