The N2 between the Shell Ultra City and KwaNokuthula at Plettenberg Bay has been reopened to traffic.
The highway has been closed since Tuesday night due to riots by residents of Qolweni.
They are demanding basic services, housing, as well as the resignation of their local councillor.
The protest was suspended last night
following mediation by the Human Rights' Commission.
Bitou Municipal spokesperson, Manfred van Rooyen, says authorities decided to reopen the road following a safety and security assessment.
"A joint operational meeting of the authorities this morning considered and assessed the events of the past week, having taken due regards of the requirements related to the safe and unhindered passage of all transportation vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and every road user has been satisfied that all the conditions are met and therefore have decided to reroute all traffic to the N2."
