Metrorail in Cape Town says two major incidents caused its trains to come to a screeching halt this morning. A pedestrian was knocked down and fatally injured by a train just outside Elsies River station. Metrorail spokesperson, Riana Scott, says the northern line has been diverted, causing long delays. In
a separate incident, Scott says a group of employees downed tools this morning after being notified that they would be paid later than expected this month. The passenger rail agency has meanwhile indicated that employees will be paid their salaries by tomorrow. Scott says services should be back to normal by peak time: "A small group of employees elected to disregard PRASA procedures to raise their concerns. Our regional management addressed the issues and the employees resumed work shortly thereafter. We acknowledge that employees have every right to raise issues of concern but doing so un-procedurally impacted unfairly on commuters. We expect a normal afternoon peak."
