The Huguenot Tunnel on the N1 near Paarl in the Boland will be closed for important maintenance work from September 2019. (Also see Alternative Routes below)

The Roads Agency, SANRAL, says the tunnel will be closed daily from ten in the

morning to six at night from Monday to Thursday for the whole of September, October and November.

The tunnel's electrical and mechanical systems will be upgraded for the first time in more than three decades, to comply with international standards. The tunnel will during that time only be opened for normal traffic from Fridays to Sundays when it will be fully opened.

The upgrading will be suspended for December and January to accommodate holiday makers, but will be resumed

after the summer holidays again.

Sanral has advised road users of Alternative routes which include:

  • Paarl > DuToit's Kloof Pass > Worcester (approx. 62km)
  • Paarl > Gouda > Tulbagh > Worcester (approx. 121km)
  • Wellington > Tulbagh > Ceres (approx. 74km)

Depending on origin and destination, the N2 Grabouw to Villiersdorp (41 km) is also an option.
