Shelters in Cape Town have until the fifth of April to apply for the City's Winter Readiness Programme. Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Zahid Badroodien, says the city has set aside 700 thousand rand for the programme this year. He says it is aimed at supplementing the
available resources of non-profit organisations which take care of homeless people. "I encourage organisations who want to apply to make sure they meet all the criteria and have all the relevant documentation to ensure their application is successful. The support we provide includes mattresses, bedding, food parcels, toiletries as well as temporary workers to assist with cooking and cleaning. Plans are also in place to get the City's Safe Space through its first winter. The Safe Space is not a shelter in the traditional sense, but rather a transitional overnight facility that provides an alternative to sleeping on the streets", says Badroodien. (File pic)
