Two people reported to have been washed away in last night's heavy rains
Several areas in eThekwini have been hit by heavy floods following the torrential downpour that fell in the past 24 hours. The Municipality's Disaster Management and Emergency Unit
is currently on the ground conducting physical assessment and providing interim relief to people that have been left destitute due to damage to their homes.
Majority of the areas that have been heavily affected are in the Northern and Outer West regions of the Municipality. There are no reports of injuries or death thus far expect for the two people that were washed away last night at Ward 60 in Verulam.
The Search and Rescue team was dispatched last
night to search for the two people but as of this morning the two have not been found.
EThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede said the search and rescue team will return to the site today to search for the two people that were washed away last night.
"We are confident that the two will be found and we have also dispatched teams to most areas that have been affected by the heavy rain. Some of the displaced people have already been accommodated at Amoati Hall in Inanda. Our Disaster Management officials and volunteers will continue conducting physical assessment and providing necessary disaster support," said Mayor Gumede.
