Western Cape Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a 61-year old man died yesterday in a hit and run incident in Pearly beach. Police spokesperson, Andre Traut, says the man was cycling along Esplenade Road when he was hit by a white light delivery vehicle. Bernard Labuschagne was admitted to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Residents of the small coastal town allege the driver

was an abalone poacher. They held a protest march yesterday afternoon, demanding increased policing in the area where abalone poaching is rampant in broad daylight. Overstrand municipal mayor Dudley Coetzee says poachers drive recklessly in the area. He says there is however no evidence yet that the driver was a poacher. (image: Archive)
