Beaufort West Mayor, Noel Constable, has blamed sabotage as the likely reason behind the blocked sewer system, which is creating a dire water shortage in the Karoo town. He says a truck is due to arrive from George soon to remove large rocks in the sewer system. The town is facing a water crisis due to the ongoing drought, with reservoirs standing at 20 percent. Recent rains in the province have had no real impact on water levels in the town. Water supply from five boreholes dug in January, has since dwindled, with only one still producing water. Constable explains: "In one of our main manholes, which is ten metres deep, are rocks. On Thursday, we noticed the manhole covers had been removed in rocks thrown in. A truck is coming from George to help us retrieve it. We are not 100 percent sure, but we suspect it could be sabotage. We'll open an investigation later."
