The National Union of Mine Workers has called on the construction industry in the Western Cape to stop what it calls the manipulation of union membership to disempower majority unions. The union has alleged that the Building Industry Bargaining Council collects levies from workers but does not reflect this on their books. A group of NUM members supported by the SACP marched down Voortrekker road in Bellville, bringing Saturday morning traffic to a halt. Dressed in Red T shirts and carrying placards, the workers also demanded safety in the work place, saying that earlier this year, three co workers died at a trench at a construction site in Tokai. NUM Regional Secretary Sonwabile Fisa says workers continue to work in dangerous conditions without concern for their safety. The bargaining council says it will look into the workers' demands. The group was earlier interdicted from marching to the Eskom building in the same area over various grievances.
