The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) have impounded more than 500 Minibus taxis during Operation Buya Mthetho which commenced in February this year.
These taxis were found to be in a very poor condition, most were unroadworthy with license discs which had expired in 2012.
Some had discs indicating of dish washer repairs or newspaper clippings, drivers of these taxis were stopped because for either driving in emergency lanes, on the wrong side of the road or for ignoring road traffic markings and regulations.
A taxi association from Alexandra has announced intention to strike on Monday 25 June, because of these operations, however the JMPD is of the view that this operation was justified.
The Chief of Police Mr David Tembe said" the operation is ongoing and intensified. The officers will not stop doing what is expected of them- to protect the commutters from travelling in unroadworthy and unlicensed vehicles".
