Celebrating #WomensMonth through sport In the second of a series of nine profiles about women from the South African Police Service who will be running the Comrades Marathon on Sunday 28 August, we will be bringing you stories of nine women from across eight provinces about their journey
towards running "ultimate human race".
Lieutenant Colonel Nkambule of Mpumalanga Provincial Detectives: Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit will on Sunday, 28 August 2022, be amongst approximately 16 000 runners who will be taking on the gruelling 95th Comrades Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
She is one of only 18 female police officers out of a total of 130 police men and women in the country who will run the 90 kilometres race.
In her training for the "ultimate human race", she has earlier this year completed the Kosmos 3-in-1 marathon which comprises of three races in one day totalling 73.3 kilometres.
Lieutenant Colonel Nkambule has her sights set on sub ten: meaning that when achieved, she will get a Robert Mtshali medal
for completing the race in under 10 hours.
She says she is not sure whether she will be able to cut down the extra 22 minutes from her 2019 finish time (10h22) when she ran her first Comrades.
Like a typical runner, although she has amassed significant kilometres to put her in a good footing for her sub ten goal, she says she feels she has not trained enough for the race.
Nonetheless, we in the SAPS are certain that she has done enough to bring home the Robert Mtshali medal.
