Tributes are pouring in for the former Mayor of the George Municipality in the Southern Cape, Mercia Draghoender, who died suddenly yesterday.
The 63-year-old Draghoender served as an Independent Democrats Mayor in 2010.
George Mayor, Leon van Wyk, says Draghoender was the first woman to take a leadership role in the George
Council.
She also served as a councillor for Ward 20 in Borcherds, as speaker of the council and was a member of mayoral committee George.
Van Wyk described her as a feisty councillor who cared deeply for the community and who was constantly seeking to improve lives.
Draghoender was a member of the DA before joining the Good Party and then the PBI.
