There were some tears and anxious little faces among the Grade 1s at Blanco Primary in George in the Southern Cape.
For some starting their first day in the big school was a bit overwhelming, but most took it in their stride.
6-year old Mila Barry's parents, Cecil and Louise, say while
they are excited for the new school year, there is also a lot of uncertainty ahead "We're very excited, it's the first day, but all good, happy to be back.
The tears are close, it's been a long holiday, but we're very excited.
Can't wait for the year ahead.
But because of Covid you don't want to get too excited, not knowing what lies ahead" Learning and teaching also got underway on the first day of the 2022 academic year at Thembalethu Primary School.
The school has over 1 700 learners.
School Principal, Bathini Tyesi says pupils will continue to attend on a rotational basis in compliance with COVID-19 protocols.
"Books are in place, timetables are in place, enrolment is in place.
So everything is in
place because we've already opened on the 10th, making preparations for this day so that no interruptions can happen.
Only teaching and learning must take place today."
