The Department of Health has confirmed that it has detected the presence of coronavirus variants dominant in India and in the UK in South Africa.
The network for genomic surveillance says the two variants of concern are the B.1.1.7 dominant in the UK and the B.1.617.2 first detected in India.
been revealed by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize in the latest update on Covid-19 statistics in the country.
The health department says four cases of B.1.617.2 have been detected in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and all have a history of recent arrival from India.
In the past 24 hours, South Africa has recorded 2 191 cases.
The total number of deaths is 54 724 after 37 more COVID-19 related deaths were reported.
The department says it will continue to monitor the spread of these variants.
