Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, has welcomed the arrest of six people who are suspected of being behind the torching of trucks on the N3 highway on Monday 3 May 2021.
One suspect was arrested shortly after the incident while the five other suspects were rounded up a
few hours later.
Soon after the incident had been reported to the police, a search operation was launched which resulted in the arrest of the six in the Leondale area south of Alberton.
It is alleged that at around 05:15 on Monday a truck was petrol-bombed on the N3 near Leondale by a then-unknown group of people.
The driver escaped unharmed from his burning vehicle.
The same group of suspects was reported to have attacked two other trucks but allegedly only took the keys and left the trucks in the road.
Police were quickly on the scene and arrested one person whilst the balance of the suspects escaped on foot.
After continuing with the search operation, police arrested
five more people in Leondale.
The six suspects are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate Court today (Wednesday 5 May) on charges of malicious damage to property, attempted hijacking and interfering with essential infrastructure.
A search still continues for suspects involved in the petrol-bombing of two trucks on Saturday 1 May along the R59 highway just south of Alberton.
Both drivers escaped unharmed.
Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators is encouraged to call the crime stop number 08600-10111 or engage through the MySAPS app which can be downloaded to any smartphone.
"This success comes as a result of swift and decisive action by the police and should send a stern message to criminals that the police will come after them.
Such acts of lawlessness will not be left unpunished.
We will ensure that the perpetrators are caught and face the full might of the law", remarked Lieutenant General Mawela.
He also urged the arresting and investigating teams to ensure sufficient evidence is collected so that a solid case could be presented in court.
