The Western Cape has climbed one position in the national Matric Pass Rate rankings from fourth to third place.
With a 79.9% score, it is the province that dropped the least for the 2020 school year.
All nine provinces showed a marked drop in pass rate.
Down by 2.4% from last year,
the Western Cape however declined the least.
Provincial Education Minister, Debbie Schäfer: "The fact that we had the lowest drop of all the provinces is something we can be happy about.
Our reten tion rate has also gone up amazingly which is extremely important for us as well.
So for me probably that's most important that many people were dropping out but our retention rates from Grade 10 to 12 is still the highest in the country and it certainly has increased from last year so we very happy about.
Our bachelors pass rate and numbers has gone up its the highest it's ever been, at close to 44%."
