Hundreds of residents in the Garden Route towns of Knysna and Mossel Bay in the Soutern Cape have been duped out of their life savings and pensions in an alleged crypto-currency investment scam.
The victims have lost a total of around R5 million.
The fraudsters, who operated under Trinity Token Investments, have
since fled the area.
They also operated in the Eastern Cape where they defrauded people from Aliwal North.
The cases have been transferred to the commercial branch of
the Hawks for further investigation.
Vuyolwethu Mfumbe and Samantha Keen are Mossel Bay investors who lost their money: "When I called the consultants no one answered.
Their phones were on voice mail.
Then I started to think there was something strange.
On day 2, I called again and it was still on voicemail.
So unfortunately we got scammed.
I saw friends of mine who invested and they received money and later on I said it's a legit company so I also invested."
