The National Union of Metalworkers says it has embarked on a strike at all of Macsteel plants and operations countrywide from today.
Union spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says workers are demanding that 99 employees who were retrenched be reinstated immediately.
She says the decision to dismiss them was implemented in the middle of
December.
Hlubi-Majola says this was done deliberately to prevent the union from speaking to management: "Macsteel has previously retrenched w orkers and the savings it has made from the job cuts has allowed it to pay managers and executives generous bonuses and packages.
We believe this is the same strategy that they are using even now.
This is an example of rampant profiteering at its worst.
Greedy capitalists are exploiting the pandemic for themselves at the expense of the working class.
They have no regard for the suffering of employees or the impact on workers and their families."
