Police have used a water canon in a bid to enforce Covid19 regulations at the SASSA offices in Bellville in Cape Town.
Chaotic scenes played out as hundreds of people converged to apply for or renew social grants.
The backlog has been exacerbated by the lapsing of the temporary disability
grant at the end of December last year.
There are 53 000 cancelled temporary disability grants in the Western Cape.
Provincial Minister for Social Development, Sharna Fernandez has condemned the police action.
Fernandez says, "I condemn in the strongest possible terms the water bombing by SAPS aimed at the most vulnerable in Bellville this morning, who are desperately seeking assistance from SASSA regarding the termination of all SASSA Temporary Disability Grants given the dire situation we are all witnessing on the ground."
